California is just what you need. There are two trailheads to chose from, one in each end, so backpacking it one way is an option if you can arrange for a ride back. This is a hiking trail that is quite long, so make sure you bring plenty of supplies. Sometimes this hiking trail gets really dry, so make sure you check current conditions and fire restrictions with local forest authorities before you head out. The total elevation difference for this wilderness hiking trail is 4,456 feet which is higher than average. During the long summer days, highs frequently  
are in the 90's at South Fork Cottonwood Trail. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 50's. Daytime highs throughout the wintertime are in the 40's, and nighttime lows in the 30's for South Fork Cottonwood Trail. Glorious wilderness trails in California are in abundance, and South Fork Cottonwood Trail in Tehama County is one of them. Being 37.6 miles long; it's considered a longer hike. South Fork Cottonwood Trail goes through some very different elevations, so keep in mind that you may need to dress differently at different elevations. If you fancy the outdoors you'll fancy it here in the Klamath Mountains. Sulphur Spring is a charming spot to visit while you're at South Fork Cottonwood Trail, and a good spot for whitewater paddling is Beegum Creek. This place, the Klamath Mountains, has so much outdoors fun stuff. Syd Cabin Glade is a delightful site here at South Fork Cottonwood Trail, and Cottonwood Creek - Middle Fork is a splendid whitewater spot nearby.
You think that's enough? Just getting warmed up. You'll need more than a day to discover everything South Fork Cottonwood Trail has to offer, you can camp at Wells Creek Campground, and don't forget to take a perfect little trip to Buck Creek. A short visit to Lazyman Spring is always worthwhile; Long Gulch is a fine site to visit.
