We just hiked up Welcome Lakes Trail 2 days ago from Elk Lake. The trail disappeared at the top due to a fire last year and the campground is gone. We had to hike 6 miles back to Battle Axe Camp to put in a total 16 miles. We just made it back before total darkness. Lesson learned was to ask about trail conditions specifically when calling Ranger Station not just snow. Says Ellen
Welcome Lakes Trail has a total elevation difference of 3,795 feet which is higher than average. Welcome Lakes Trail has two trailheads which means you have the option of backcountry hiking it one way if you have someone to pick you up at the other end. Of course, this is an overnight backcountry walk, 2.5 days normally, so better have big a backpack to fit all the stuff you need. Different parts of this backpacking and hiking trail are at very different elevations, so keep in mind that you may need to dress differently at different elevations. With its 16.2 miles of walking distance; it's longer than many backpacking and hiking trails. This backpacking and hiking trail sometimes gets very dry, so do check for current fire restrictions before you go if you plan to bring a stove or make a camp fire. Now this backpacking and hiking trail is pretty long, so do pack enough food to last the whole trip.
