  You'll have to go far from Hood River to get to Portage Trail, but when you spend some time backcountry hiking here you will feel like a whole new person. Can’t wait to get out in the great outdoors, Portage Trail in Clackamas County, Oregon is just the spot. Backcountry backpacking in Oregon is a tremendous idea. The length of this wilderness trail is on the longer side having an average number of uphill miles which makes this a very tough wilderness hiking trail for advanced hikers looking for a wonderful challenge. Backpacking here in the Central Cascade
    Range is a very splendid way to see these mountaintops. Different parts of Portage Trail are at very different elevations, and that means that some parts of the hiking trail could be very different from other parts of it. This is a region covered with lots of wilderness hiking
trails. Portage Trail usually gets a lot of precipitation; December is the month that gets the most rain while July is frequently the driest month. The total elevation difference for Portage Trail is 3,422 feet, and that is higher than average. Every Oregon backpacking and hiking trail has its own character. As long as you like the outdoors you will like Oregon. For the duration of the warmest time of the year, highs frequently are in the 70's at Portage Trail, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's with  
temperatures at Portage Trail dipping down into the 30's through winter nights. Oregon has plenty of fine backpacking and hiking trails, and one of those is Portage Trail in Clackamas County. Please follow all local rules about fires and camping. Portage Trail has only one trailhead, so you're looking at an in and out walk. Portage Trail is 11 miles long; it's a long hiking trail. This walk should take you about 1.5 days, so it's a nice thing if your backpack is big enough to do the job. Now this hiking trail is pretty long, so do pack enough food to last the whole trip. At parts of the year this vicinity sees very little rain, so don’t forget to check for any current fire restrictions before you go.

Briefly about the general area:
You truly must fancy the Central Cascade Range. There are some great whitewater spots on Hood River - Lake Branch; Eden Park is right here at Portage Trail. Looking for some flowing water? Try Rushing Water Creek, and Portage Trail is great enough to spend more than a day at, Barlow Campground is a great local campground.
These mountains rock, just explore all the entertaining things to do in the Central Cascade Range. At Portage Trail you always meet someone from Hood River, and a nice location to camp here at Portage Trail is Twin Bridges Campground. Yep, outdoors enjoyable stuff to do are in fact abundant here at Portage Trail. Ramona Falls is a tremendous local attraction; hey, Muddy Fork is a great local stream. Yocum Falls is a wonderful spot to pop by while you're at Portage Trail, and Old Maid Flat is a splendid place here at Portage Trail.
A delightful location near Portage Trail is Sand Canyon; whitewater paddling is not for everybody but if it's for you then, we recommend Sandy River.
