The hiking trail stays roughly within the same elevation zone the whole time, so you get pretty much the same conditions along the whole hiking trail. trailhead, so you're looking at an in and out backcountry hike.
Briefly about the general area:
Camping at Lookout Springs Campground is always a pleasant experience. Paddling on Sandy River is so much fun; there's some flowing water close by, Shining Creek is a stream
you can pop by during your stay.
So many cool things in the Central Cascade Range, just inspiring. Squaw Meadow is a delightful location to stretch your legs a bit, and Squaw Creek is one of the streams close by that might be worth a visit. Camping is available at Shining Lake Campground, and whitewater paddling is fine on Roaring River.
