trail gets really dry, so make sure you check current conditions and fire restrictions with local forest authorities before you head out. You should count on this hike taking about 5.5 hours, but of course some people walk a bit slower and some a bit faster. This is a backpacking
trail that is quite long, so do pack enough food to last the whole trip. Please follow all local rules about fires and camping. Huckleberry Trail is a mid-length hiking trail with very little uphill walking involved which makes it a good hiking and backpacking trail for experienced
trekkers in splendid shape.
Briefly about the general area: Do set aside some time for Whiskey Flat while you're here at Huckleberry Trail, and Hells Canyon Packers is a perfect campground nearby. There's no way somebody can get bored here in the Wallowa Mountains.
The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Summit Spring, and Huckleberry Trail is not far at all from La Grande. So much entertaining stuff to do in the Wallowa Mountains, not enough time. Horseshoe Spring is an inspiring place to check out while you're here; you can stay
the night at Goebel's. And if that's not enough, there's heaps more to do near Huckleberry Trail. If you fancy a little side spree, try Big Canyon, and obviously Horseshoe Creek flows through this vicinity. Don’t forget to go to Horseshoe Basin since you're here at Huckleberry Trail, and let's not forget Threemile Creek which is a stream that you may bump into during your stay.
