There are two trailheads to chose from, one in each end which means you have the option of backpacking it one way if you have someone to pick you up at the other end. This is not a very long hiking trail but you should still bring some emergency supplies just in case something happens. Being 1.2 miles long it's a shorter type hike. You should count on this trek taking about 1 hours, but you never know stuff could go wrong and you could get stuck so be prepared for that. The great outdoors trail stays roughly within the same elevation zone the whole time which means the conditions are about the same from start to finish. This region does get very dry sometimes, so make sure you check current conditions and fire restrictions with local forest authorities before you head out. The total elevation difference for Grass Mountain Trail is 341 feet which is lower than average.
