Crater Rim Trail is many miles long with an average amount of climbing distance which makes it an excellent trail for experienced backcountry trekkers in delightful shape. Being 10.6 miles long; it's considered a longer backcountry hike. Sometimes this hiking and backpacking trail gets really dry, so do check for current fire restrictions before you go if you plan to bring a stove or make a camp fire. Of course, this is an overnight backcountry walk, 1.5 days normally, so make sure you've got all your overnight gear packed. Briefly about the general area: If you fancy a little side tour, try Kahele; a wooded region nearby is Klauea Forest Reserve. Camping at Nmakanipaio Campground is always a nice experience, and everybody loves Ka Desert. Do pay a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park since you're here at Crater Rim Trail, and Halap is pretty close.
