Every single Hawaii wilderness hiking trail is scenic in its own way. Relatively far from Kapaa you come upon Alakai Swamp Trail, but backcountry hiking it is pleasant excitement any time. Now this great outdoors hiking trail is pretty long, so make sure you bring plenty of supplies. Don’t forget to check for any current restrictions or closures before you go. The number of backpacking and hiking trails in this region is not very high. Alakai Swamp Trail has only one trailhead, so you're looking at an in and out backcountry walk. The time needed for this backcountry
hike is roughly 5.5 hours, but of course some folks walk a bit slower and some a bit faster. There's not much difference in elevation along Alakai Swamp Trail, so you get pretty much the same conditions along the whole trail. Being 6.4 miles long it's a mid length trek. Hiking
trails are wonderful and plentiful in Hawaii; Alakai Swamp Trail is one of them, and it's in Kauai County.
Briefly about the general area: Be careful coming to Alakai Swamp Trail, you might not ever want to return back home again. On a great day it's a nice idea to spend
the day at Hanakpai Beach, and there's a great forest called Npali-Kona Forest Reserve. Kahuamaa Flat is a pleasant place here at Alakai Swamp Trail, and obviously Waiakali Stream is a striking stream that is worth a visit. A short tour to Mhihi Falls is always worthwhile,
and don't forget to take a tremendous little tour to Kauaikinana Stream. Kipalau Valley is close to Alakai Swamp Trail and is a glorious location, and Moeloa Falls is an inspiring location to check out during your stay. You're sure to bump into some fine folks from Kapaa here. If you want to hit the beach, Kalalau Beach is in the neighborhood, and Hanalei has a wonderful whitewater paddling spot nearby.
