A long drive separates Hilo from Ainap Trail, but it is a really magnificent backpacking trail. There are many brilliant hiking trails in Hawaii; one of them being Ainap Trail in Hawaii County. With its 27.4 miles of walking distance; it's longer than many wilderness trails. The amount of precipitation that falls at Ainap Trail is in the vicinity of the national average; during
    January this region sees the most rain while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation. This is a long hiking and backpacking trail, so do pack enough food to last the whole trip. Different parts of this wilderness trail are at very different elevations, and that
means that some parts of the wilderness trail could be very different from other parts of it. This walk should take you about 4 days, so better have big backpack to fit all the stuff you need. This wilderness hiking trail has a total elevation difference of 8,267 feet which is higher than average. If you happen to be in Hawaii, why not go backpacking, it is the brilliant thing to do. Summertime highs at Ainap Trail regularly tend to be in the 70's. For the period of the dark hours of summer temperatures dip down into the 60's. Daytime highs through the  
winter are in the 70's, and night lows through the winter for Ainap Trail tend to be in the 50's. Ainap Trail is a backpacking and hiking trail of great length with an average amount of climbing distance which makes this hiking trail tremendous for hard core backpackers looking for adventure. Hiking here in Hawaii is a must. There are so many hiking trails in this neighborhood. Please follow all local rules about fires and camping. This wilderness hiking trail has only one trailhead, so in and out is the way to trek it normally.

Briefly about the general area:
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a tremendous local destination here at Ainap Trail. Places like Keakapulu Flat are glorious to take a look at, and you'll possibly meet some folks from Hilo here.
Nmakanipaio Campground is a great campground nearby; Klauea Gulch is unquestionably a great site to check out. Some glorious nature is available in Mauna Loa Forest Reserve; a tour to Ainap Trail wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Alili Spring.
