This vicinity does get very dry sometimes, so don’t forget to check for any current fire restrictions before you go. Quite far from Bakersfield you bump into Virginia Trail, but what a perfect spot
    for backcountry backpacking it is. Virginia Trail is a two ended great outdoors trail with two trailheads which means you have the option of backpacking it one way if you have someone to pick you up at the other end. Through the warmest time of the year, highs typically are in
the 80's at Virginia Trail. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 50's. Daytime highs all through the winter are in the 40's while Virginia Trail nighttime low temperatures all through the winter are in the 20's. Backcountry hiking in California is such a splendid thing to do. The yearly precipitation here at Virginia Trail is about average; January is when you get the most rain here, and July meanwhile is the driest month. This great outdoors trail has a total elevation difference of 2,879 feet, and that is higher than average. With its  
8.2 miles of walking distance it's a mid length hike. The time needed for this backcountry hike is roughly 7.5 hours, but you never know stuff could go wrong and you could get stuck so be prepared for that. The number of hiking trails in this vicinity is not very high. The hiking trails of the Southern Sierra Nevada are a splendid way to explore these mountains. This is a long backpacking and hiking trail, so do pack enough food to last the whole trip. Virginia Trail is a mid-length hiking trail having an average number of uphill miles which makes it a fine hiking trail for experienced hikers in great shape. Each one of the many backpacking and hiking trails of California has its own character. And keep in mind that there could be temporary safety restrictions in place. Some parts of this wilderness hiking trail are much higher up than other parts of the wilderness hiking trail, so keep in mind that you may need to dress differently at different elevations.

Briefly about the general area:
That right there is a heap of fun things already but it goes on, the Southern Sierra Nevada has it all. A spree to Bear Dens revives the spirit. A spree to Virginia Trail wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Sandy Creek Spring, and Marshall Meadow is a perfect place to check out.
Be careful coming to the Southern Sierra Nevada, you might not ever want to return back home again. Why not camp at Cedar Creek Campground if you're here at Virginia Trail; close by you stumble on pleasant locations like Portuguese Pass. And if you're still looking for more outdoors enjoyable things just keep reading. Alder Creek is a lovely stream that is worth visiting, and a short visit to Water Gap Spring is always worthwhile. If you came for an overnight stay Alder Creek Campground is a great place to camp, and do have a look at Slick Rock Creek while you're here at Virginia Trail.
There are some great whitewater spots on Kern River, and folks from Bakersfield love to come here.
