You'll have got to go far from San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos to get to Middle Peak Loop Trail, but there's pleasant natural prettiness awaiting you here along it. The total elevation difference for this hiking trail is 620 feet, and that is lower than average. Backcountry backpacking here in the Santa Rosa Mountains is a very good way to see these mountains. At parts of the year this vicinity

This is not a very long hiking trail but it's always great to bring some emergency supplies, you never know what could happen. And keep in mind that there could be temporary safety restrictions in place. You spend the whole backcountry hike in roughly the same elevation zone, so you get pretty much the same conditions along the whole trail. The yearly precipitation here at Middle Peak Loop Trail is about average; the month of March is the wettest with most of the rain; June meanwhile is the driest month. Being 2.6 miles long it's a short trail. The time needed for this trek is roughly 2.5 hours, but of course some folks walk a bit slower and some a bit faster.

Briefly about the general area:
Very magnificent water scenery is available at Cuyamaca Dam right next door to Middle Peak Loop Trail. Lake Cuyamaca is a tremendous campground nearby, and La Puerta Springs is a great local attraction.
Places like Cherry Flat are pleasant to go to, and if you came for an overnight stay Paso Picacho Campground is a nice spot to camp. All year is a nice time in the Santa Rosa Mountains if you fancy the outdoors. Azalea Spring is always fun to check out; Fern Flat is a tremendous place to check out.
