Trail is located a rather long drive from Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna, but it sure is a a wonderful backpacking trail. The time needed for this backcountry hike is roughly 2 hours, but of course some people walk a bit slower and some a bit faster. There's not much difference in elevation
along the hiking and backpacking trail which means the conditions are about the same from start to finish. With its 2.2 miles of walking distance it's a short hiking and backpacking trail. This backcountry trail is not that long but you should still bring some emergency supplies
just in case something happens.
Briefly about the general area: Man, is there plenty of exciting things to do in the Coast Ranges. If you came for an overnight stay Tolkan Campground is a magnificent place to camp. Why not camp at Horse Mountain Campground since you're here at Lightning Trail, and if you come at the right time of year, Mattole River offers some pleasant whitewater.
