This is a one trailhead hiking trail, so in and out is the way to backcountry hike it normally. This trek shouldn't take more than 3.5 hours, but of course some people walk a bit slower and some a bit faster. There's not much difference in elevation along Humbug Trail, so you get pretty much the same conditions along the whole backpacking trail. Humbug Trail has a total elevation difference of 1,041 feet which is an average number. With its 4 miles of walking distance it's a mid length backcountry trek. At parts of the year this area sees very little rain, so do check for current fire restrictions before you go if you plan to bring a stove or make a camp fire. Humbug Trail is not that long but you should still bring some emergency supplies just in case something happens.
