This hiking trail has only one trailhead, so you'll be hiking it in and back out. Big Spring Trail is not that long but it's always good to bring some emergency supplies, you never know what could happen. The time needed for this walk is roughly 2 hours, but of course some folks
walk a bit slower and some a bit faster. Please follow all local rules about fires and camping. This neighborhood does get very dry sometimes, so do check for current fire restrictions before you go if you plan to bring a stove or make a camp fire. You'll have got to go far from
Gardnerville Ranchos to get to Big Spring Trail, but many people like to walk here to be next to the fresh air. Big Spring Trail is a relatively wet spot typically with a good deal of rainfall; of all the months in a year January is the one with the most rain, and the driest of
the months is July.
Briefly about the general area: Stay the night at Pleasant Boat-In Campground. Big Spring Trail is a glorious place to camp, Bear Creek Campground is a glorious place, and some nearby water includes Whisky Creek. Having a delightful time in the
Northern Sierra Nevada is uncomplicated. Put some time aside to spend at Big Spring while you're here at Big Spring Trail, and nearby you come across Grouse Canyon which is a great place to explore.
